The Pyrex brand was created in Corning, N.Y., but decades of glass production in Charleroi has put it in most American kitchens.

“We call Charleroi home,” said Mike Scheffki, brand manager for Pyrex at World Kitchen.

On May 16, 2015 World Kitchen executives traveled to Charleroi to celebrate the centennial of the popular kitchenware products that are found in eight of 10 American homes.

Scheffki said the celebration highlighted workers at the Charleroi plant and involved the whole town.

The goal was for the employees to “step out of the factory and into the spotlight.”

“We wanted to involve the entire Mon (Monongahela River) Valley area because the employees come from all over the area, and we understand how important Pyrex and the plant is to the people,” Scheffki said.

While it was the brand's birthday, it was important to shine the spotlight on the folks in Charleroi and the product they create.

Mayor Mark Alterici  renamed Charleroi as “Pyrex, Pa.” for the day, and officials unveiled a large mixing bowl statue. The USPS had a "Special" cachet stamp produced for a limited number of pre-stamped envelopes. The cachet stamp has since been destroyed.

“Pyrex is one of the best-known names in the country, and Charleroi wants to be a big part of that.”

Pyrex was created in 1915 by Corning Glass scientists charged with developing lantern glass for railroads.

The Pyrex brand found its way into the kitchen when Bessie Littleton, the wife of a Corning scientist, asked her husband to bring home some glass to use in place of a broken casserole dish.

He gave her the sawed-off bottoms of some battery jars and the rest is history, according to the company website.

The Charleroi plant began producing Pyrex about a decade after Corning Glass bought it.

Some Pyrex products are clear, such as the large measuring cups.

Others are opal glass, milk glass with ornamental designs.

Scheffki said “tens of millions of pieces” of Pyrex glass are produced in the Charleroi plant.
