Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana)  - You can enjoy fresh green foliage topped by long, thick dusty-pink plumes when you grow Pampas Grass seeds. These elegant ornamental grasses have "feather duster" plumes from late summer and throughout the fall! The plumes are often cut and dried for indoor use, or they can be left on the plant for wonderful winter interest. Ornamental Pampas Grass is not only attractive, but it also is very functional. It can be a stunning specimen plant in large landscapes, or it can be used to create screens or borders. These large ornamental grasses do need lots of room!

Cortaderia selloana Pampas Grass is a low-maintenance plant. There is no need to spray for insects or any other bothersome garden pest. It will grow in most soils and responds favorably to frequent fertilization. To obtain good growth and plume production, pampas grass should be fertilized with a complete fertilizer (6-6-6, 8-8-8 or 10-10-10) at a rate of two pounds per 100 square feet four times each year. Ornamental grass care also includes cutting out the brown, dead foliage in the late winter. Or, if significant frost damage occurs, the entire plant can be cut back to 2 feet from the ground. The grass blades are sharp, so care must be taken when pruning.

How To Grow Pink Pampas Grass From Ornamental Grass Seeds: Cortaderia selloana seeds can be started indoors. Using a seed starting tray filled with a pre-moistened seed starting medium that drains well, place the ornamental grass seeds on top of the soil and gently press the seeds in. Keep the pink Pampas Grass seeds moist until germination occurs. The ornamental grass plants will need to be re-potted into larger pots as they grow. Some gardeners start the Pampas Grass seeds directly outside in the spring after danger of frost has passed. Prepare a seedbed, and press the seeds into the soil that has been worked into a fine tilth. Keep the ornamental grass seeds moist, and throughout the first growing season, water the grass with regularity. In subsequent years, Pampas grass will be drought tolerant. Typically, plumes will not form until the plant is 2 - 3 years of age.

    Seed Germination instructions:

Seed Depth: These are small seeds which should be mixed with fine sand to enable an even and consistent sowing.

Try not to cover the seeds with compost instead just press the seeds very gently into the growing media.

Growing media should contain organic material and still have reasonably good drainage.

Average Germination Time is normally 1 to 2 weeks although they can sprout earlier or later depending on the conditions.

Seeds require sunlight to germinate but artificial lights and other growing aides can be used.

Try to keep seeds moist (but not wet) until germination occurs with the use of a mist spray bottle.

For best results particularly in cooler climates we recommend starting your seeds in a propagator or green house. They can also be started on a sunny window sill and just as long as the frost cant get to them then they will be just fine.

Once established they look after themselves and do make one of the very best ornamental there is.

    Planting instructions:

It is usually carried out in a greenhouse, due to seasonal and climatic conditions less affected, sowing is not affected by seasonal restrictions , often with flowering may be required, with deep l0cm shallow basin, rich in humus sandy loam is appropriate. After the basin filled with wood Calibrating the soil surface compaction, soil irrigated after water wet, then it can be planted. Sowing is not too dense, can be incorporated into the sand, along with the seeds sown in the rear surface of the casing (to see the seed for the degree), the surface of the cover glass pots, newspapers, etc., in order to reduce the evaporation of water, usually after 5-7 days germination, mulch can be opened. Watering immediately after planting, keep moist.
