If you are looking for a small (up to 2/5" or 10mm) sustainable form of livefood.

Which you will be able to feed to your fish on a regular basis; Then look no further than this little species.

Simplicity in itself to set-up and maintain.

The fish seem to love these critters and take them with gusto every time they are offered.

This Tropical species   (Hyalella azteca) is possibly the easiest live food to culture.

As opposed to all other North American and European species, like Gammarus Pulex.

Which are not tropical and have a MUCH slower growth rate.

I feed these to all my non-herbivores:

Apistogrammas, Discus, Corydoras, Betta, Livebearers,

Angelfish, Tetra, Barbs and Catfish.

- Guaranteed live on arrival!

In rare cases there might be less amphipods than ordered, as this species is known to cannibalize.

We do try to mitigate this by adding more specimens than ordered.

In the case of a complete DOA (dead on arrival),

contact me directly and add a few high quality pictures of the still sealed bag.

The contents have to be clearly distinguishable.

If the DOA is recognised, we will send a replacement culture as soon as possible.

No refund.

The culture will be shipped in a special bag, with small pieces of

filtersponge so the Amphipods have something to grab onto.

This reduces stress, and keeps the culture healthy, during shipping, for many weeks.

By ordering, you accept all of the above.

Care sheet

Home Aquaculture:

If you are not one for keeping anything that needs a lot of maintenance, don't worry about temp.,p.H etc.

If the water gets cloudy, just do a water change with tank or tap water.

Drain off and fill up, as quick as that.

In nature they have to put up with flood and drought conditions,

as well as temperature fluctuations and a lack of food,

so just feed them literally anything.

which in nature you might find in a stream or lake, they are after all scavengers just like most crustaceans.

They must think every day in captivity is Christmas, not having to rummage round for a meal!

For optimal conditions:

Container:

Use a 2+ Gallon / 10+ Liter storage container or old aquarium.

The bigger, the easier it is to maintain.

Filtration:

If you cant use an air stone , try to get a container with as large a surface area as possible.

Filtration is not needed if you have circulation from an air stone.

Temperature:

The optimal temperature range is between 68F - 78F / 20C - 25 C

but they can still thrive within the range of 40F - 86F / 5C - 30C

Substrate:

You do not have to use any kind of substrate, it will just collect waste and make it harder to maintain.

A few rocks and/or some coarse filter sponge is perfect.

Diet:

This species is omnivor.

Flakes, granules and koi pellets.

Any boiled thinly sliced vegetable.

Plant cuttings and algae.

Be careful not to overfeed.

If the provided food is not gone within 24 hours,

you are feeding too much and risk fouling the water.

Lighting:

Although lighting is not required,

I can highly recommend direct sunlight as it helps algae growth which will serve as free food.

Harvesting:

When your culture is mature and ready for harvesting.

All you have to do is drop in a thin slice of cucumber or zucchini, both should float.

Wait 5 to 10 minutes and it should be crawling.

Just pick it up and shake it over a collection container or drop it directly into your aquarium.

The population explosion of this species has to be seen to be believed.

I have had this form of livefood for years now, and its truly amazing how these things reproduce so quickly.

Size: This little species is fairly small with adults reaching only 2/5" or 10mm in length.  Males are larger than females. This is perfect for feeding to tropical fish species of up to average size.

Colour: This depends entirely on their diet within their habitat.  They are semi-transparent and their entire digestive tract is visible through the walls of their shell.  They will scavenge on all manner of materials, but most of the time they will adopt plant material as their primary food source, of which algae will have an effect on their colouration, showing up in the shrimp as various shades of green. Environmental surroundings can also effect the colouration.  If subjected to a habitat with lots of silt and mud as a substrate then the shrimp will naturally appear to be brownish and blend into the surroundings which help to camouflage them and protect them from becoming prey.  You will however always be able to spot the pregnant females by the colour of her eggs being carried within her brood pouch.
