Custom Specified Products

Many of our products are cut to size to meet your requirements (e.g. artificial grass & joining tape). Once your order has been cut to measurement, it cannot be cancelled or returned (unless faulty). We would advise that you ensure your measurments are correct and that you have reviewed our product samples before you place your order.

Other Products

Non-customised products can be returned to us within 28 days of receipt. Returned goods must be in an unopened and resalable condition. Please note that for non-faulty products, you as the customer are responsible for the returns carriage costs - we recommend using a tracked service.

Faulty Products

If you believe any item in your order to be faulty please contact us as soon as possible after receipt. Please provide a detailed description of the fault and ideally provide photographic evidence. Once we have reviewed the issue we will come back to you with a resolution (usually with 2-3 working days).

How to measure

Sometimes, even though an area may look uniform, it may in fact get wider, or narrower along its length.

In order to account for these variations, we would recommend measuring your area at multiple places along the length and the width. Take the longest measurement recorded in each case as the width of the area.

We would also recommend accounting for 0.2m overlap of grass around the edge of the area- this further accounts for any measurement inaccuries or variations in the shape of the area.

Pile Direction

It is recommended that artificial grass is laid with the pile direction pointing towards the main viewing area of the space. This isn't essential, but will provide a better finished effect when you look out on the area.

IArtificial grass pile is in the same direction as the grass is rolled.

Try to minimise joins

If possible, try to use a single roll of artificial grass.

Our grass is available in multiple widths and in many cases a typical garden installation can be completed without a join.

Multiple Spans Required

If is is not possible to complete a installation without a join, try to minimise the number of joins required.

It is essential that if multiple lengths of grass are required, the pile runs in the same direction . Should the pile run in a different direction, particularly at a 90 degree angle, the join will be easily visible.

Complex Shapes

Measuring is more complicated for irregular shapes and there is no 'one size fits all' guide to measuring the area. When planning your installation you should ensure that you:

1. Minimise joins.
2. Ensure the pile direction is consistent.
3. Ideally, direct pile towards the main viewing area.
4. Try to maintain the recommended 0.2m overlap.

See the graphic for an example of how a specific shape could be achieved.

Step 1: Measure Out

The first step to installing is to calculate how much grass you need. We'd recommend appoximately 0.2m overlap at each edge.

For a detailed guide please see our measuring guide .

Step 2: Remove the old lawn

Remove the old grass and excavate down to a depth of approximately 50mm - this can be completed with a spade or a turf cutter may save time for larger areas. Ensure the excavated area is level.

Step 3: Install a border

A border is optional, but is recommended for a secure and professional finish. The border contains the aggregate subbase and also provides a secure surface to secure the artificial grass too. Tanalised 2" x 2" timber is a good choice for straight edges and gradual curves.

Step 4: Lay the subbase

A subbase allows stable footing for your new lawn and also aids drainage. We would recommend using MOT (hardcore) to a depth of around 40mm.

The subbase should be compacted with a wacker plate (ideally), a roller or the back of a heavy spade. Wacker plates are widely available from tool hire business at reasonable prices.

Step 5: Lay the base

For a smooth and flat base, sharp sand should be layed to a depth of around 25mm. Compact the sand once laid with a wacker plate, roller or the back of a heavy spade.

After compacting, ensure that the surface is level. At this point the surface should be flush with the border.

Step 6: Lay the geo-textile barrier

To ensure that natural vegitation does not penetrate your new lawn, a geo-textile weed barrier should be installed. We'd recommend ensuring that the barrier fully covers the area, including the borders. If more than one length is required, we suggest you overlap the join by about 0.2m. If required, you can pin the geo-textile down using small nails into the border.

Step 7: Lay the grass

Lay the artificial grass ensuring the turf fully covers the area, ideally with some overlap at the edges. If more than one length of grass has been used then butt up adjacent lengths.

At the end of this step we would recommend leaving allowing the grass 24 hours to settle.

Step 8: Cut the grass to size

Use a sharp knife to cut the grass to size.

If any joins are required be careful that you dont alter the grass position during the cutting process.

Step 9: Join grass (if required)

If required, use joing tape and joining adhesive to secure lengths of grass together.

Step 10: Secure the grass to the border

Use galvanised artificial grass nails to secure the edge of the turf into the border.

Step 11: Finishing touches

Brush the grass against the pile direction - this will lift the pile (which will have been compacted during storage).

Sit back and enjoy your new lawn.

Step 1: Measure Out

The first step to installing is to calculate how much grass you need. We'd recommend appoximately 0.2m overlap at each edge.

For a detailed guide please see our measuring guide .

Step 2: Prepare the area

The surface should be free from any dirt and loose debris. Clear the area by brushing with a stiff brush.

If installing on concrete or paving, ensure that there are no large indentations which cause water to pool. Artificial grass is not generally dammaged by water, but being submerged in water for long periods can cause the issues. If required, you can fill any holes with an outdoor surface screed.

Install directly on surface

PROs: The fastest, cheapest and easiest option. Minimises any 'step up' caused by the height of the grass.

CONs: Harder feel. Less cushioning. Can wear slightly quicker.

Recommended for: Temporary installations. Visual improvements to patios, decking & balconies.

DIRECT ON SURFACE

Step 3: Lay the grass

Carefully roll out your artificial grass. If distributed evenly, your artificial turf can be laid in any direction.

DIRECT ON SURFACE

Step 4: Cut to size

After the settling process is complete, cut and trim the artificial grass, using a sharp Stanley knife, ensuring the grass is cut neatly around the edges.

DIRECT ON SURFACE

Step 5: Join if needed

In order to compose the joins of your grass, use our high-quality outdoor tape and glue, following the instructions on the products. Lay the tape and apply the adhesive, before pulling the grass edges together and applying some weight to them. This can be achieved with plant pots, stones or other heavy materials.

DIRECT ON SURFACE

Step 6: Secure perimeter

When fitting our artificial turf, pin it down using our landscaping pins. Should you be using a timber frame, you will need to utilise nails.

DIRECT ON SURFACE

Step 7: Brush the pile

Finally, the fibre may be relatively flat from being rolled up, so be sure to brush against the pile to bring the fibres of the artificial grass upright. Then sit back and enjoy your artificial grass lawn!

Install over a shockpad underlay

PROs: Softer, more cushioned feel.

CONs: More expensive and complex to install. Increases the height of the grass.

Recommended for: Those who want a more realistic, cushioned feel to their artificial grass.

OVER SHOCKPAD

Step 3: Add the shockpad

Once your base has been compacted, add a shockpad or membrane on the area to be covered with artificial grass. This will not only reduce the likeliness of weeds growing through the artificial grass but will also allow vital drainage.

OVER SHOCKPAD

Step 4: Lay on grass

Carefully roll out your artificial grass. If distributed evenly, your artificial turf can be laid in any direction.

With so many choices of artificial grass products, it can be hard to establish which product is most suitable for your application. There are several things to look for when choosing your grass.

Total height/Pile height

This is the height of the grass at the longest point, with (total height) or without (pile height) the grass backing. Longer pile lengths typically (but not always) provider a denser, softer and more luxurious finish. If you want a dense, premimum finish you should also review the weight per m2 ratings.

Is longer pile better? It depends on your application. Longer pile will usually give a more premium finish but is more susceptible to flattening with wear and it holds more water (so not ideal for around a pool).

Where is long pile grass suitable for? Long pile grass is suitable for many applications, but in general such products popular for garden and landscaping applications.

Where is short pile grass suitable for? Short pile grass is, again, suitable for most applications. Budget it the most common reason to choose a short pile product, however, shorter pile can be the preferred choice for high traffic areas, as well as around pools. It is also commonly chosen for balconies & patios where a high pile product may present a trip hazard at the edges.

Total weight/ pile weight

Usually expressed as a weight per square meter, this is the weight of the grass with the backing (total weight) or without (pile weight) per m2. This measurement, coupled with the total/pile height, can be used to compare density of products. Denser products generally provide a softer and more luxurious finish.

Is longer pile better? Heavier products are generally denser and therefore offer a more luxurious finish. In most cases a denser grass would be preferred, however, in some applications a lighter weight product can have advantages.

Where is a heavy weight grass suitable for? Heavy weight grass would be the preferred choice for most applications.

Where is a light weight grass suitable for? Budget would be the main reason for choosing a lighter weight grass, however, it can be a more practical choice for poolside installations as it will hold less water.

Construction Type

All our artificial grass (together with most competitor products) are made from a mixture of Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE). Both are synthetic materials (plastics) and, while similar, they do possess slightly different properties.

Polypropylene is generally a harder wearing product but doesn’t feel quite as soft to touch as Polyethylene. The mix of the plastics in each product is some indication of how soft they feel and how hardwearing they may be. For example, a product with more Polyethylene in it is likely to feel slightly softer to touch but may be slightly more prone to wear.

Thatch & Colour

Olive – This is the slightly darker of the two colours that can blend better with natural turf, as well as other vegetation. Olive is popular for garden and landscaping installs, but its entirely down to personal preference.

Meadow Green - Meadow green is ideal for brightening up a space all year round. While suitable for all applications, this colour is most popular for gardens with limited natural vegetation, or for patio and balcony installations.

All our products have a ‘thatch’ effect - a beige/brown curled pile that sites below the green strands in the product. The ‘thatch’ provides an effect of cut grass within the product making the grass look more realistic. The addition of the thatch also increases density of the product.

With the right care, artificial grass can last for a long time. Follow our top care tips to prolong the lifespan of your lawn:

1. Brush your lawn regularly

Preferably using a brush with long bristles. By doing this, you will remove all debris locked in within the leave junctions. Large solids like leaves and seeds are also brushed out in the process. While brushing your plastic grass, also slant the blades in a way to give the grass a natural look.

2. Take care of weeds

If there is any weed growing on or around the lawn, please pluck it out. You can pick it out or rake it up. The growth of weed weakens the fibre. Therefore, it's vital in ensuring that weed doesn't grow on the lawn. The major contributor of weed growth on lawns is the persence of leaves and other organic debris. It is hence advised to keep the lawn leaf free.

3. Spray some water

Gently spray down your lawn to get rid of dust particles or any dirt that may be ingrained. Using water on your lawn helps prevent uneven distributions or infill. In case a heavy object had been placed on the fibre, brush the grass first before spraying it with water.

4. Avoid fire and hot surfaces

At all times, prevent fire and hot items like BBQ ash or coal or any burning substance from getting into contact with the fibre. Although the fibre cannot catch fire, the heat can melt the grass. Fixing the melt is a possibility but the evenness of the grass will be lost. It will be impossible to hide the blemish.

5. Clean up after your children and pets

Artificial grass is safe for children and pets and ensuring that it is clear of solid waste is as vital like the case of real grass lawns. Use the recommended gear when collecting animal waste. After you clear the droppings (in the case of pets) spray the area gently with water. You can use recommended perfumes to fight off the odour.

6. Be careful of pesky stains

Don't worry yourself too much about stains. Our artificial grass are stain resistant. A little water and soap will do the trick in case of ketchup and sauce spills. However, do act quickly when it comes to stains and remove as much of the spillage as possible before it begins to harden in particular with wine and oil.

DO
  • Brush the grass regularly in the opposite direction of the artificial fibre
  • Regularly remove leaves and debris using a leaf blower, stiff brush or plastic rake
  • Trim hedges and trees often to limit the amount of leaves falling onto the lawn
  • Apply weed killer twice a year to the whole area to prevent weeds growing and to kill any stray ones
  • Use an artificial turf spray to clean away any urine from your pets

DON'T
  • Leave stains to settle — and don’t rub them!
  • Use barbeques, grills or fire pits
  • Leave equipment such as chainsaws or hedge trimmers on the turf after use
  • Use sharp objects on the grass
  • Have any motor vehicles on the artificial grass (wheelbarrows, bicycles and wheelchairs are all fine)

CHOOSING ARTIFICIAL GRASS What artificial grass is best?

Artificial grass comes in many qualities, colours and sizes. Generally, quality is measured by the blade length of products and the density (measured in grams per square metre). Colours and styles vary from products that try to imitate a natural looking garden lawn (with all the imperfections that go with it) to lush green 'perfect' turf. What artificial grass is best will depend on its application and your personal choices. View our product guide for a full comparison of the Ultimate Grass product range.

We’re happy to help. Just contact us and we’ll answer your queries without delay.

INSTALLING ARTIFICIAL GRASS Is artificial grass easy to install?

Preparation is the key here. If you prepare the ground to the correct guidelines, then it is very simple and quick to lay. The artificial grass has been designed to be easily installed DIY. Some people may ask for the assistance of a landscaper to prepare the groundwork for them.

If you’re at all unsure, then feel free to contact us for further advice, or check out our DIY installation guide which gives you a step by step guide to fitting an artificial lawn on almost any suitable surface.

Can I install artificial grass myself?

Yes. If you’re practically minded, you can install Ultimate Grass yourself. And you only need basic tools. We’ll give you plenty of help and advice including a step-by-step installation guide.

Can artificial grass be laid on concrete?

Yes. Installing artificial grass on concrete is easy as there is already a solid base to lay on. If the installation site is external you should ensure that the concrete has an appropriate runoff for rain and that water does not pool on the surface (pooled water on the turf could damage the backing over a long period). Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Can artificial grass be laid on block paving?

Yes, but the effect will be best if the paving surface is uniform and free of lumps/bumps. You should also ensure that the paving has an appropriate runoff for rain and that water does not pool on the surface (pooled water on the turf could damage the backing over a long period). Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Can artificial grass be laid on soil?

Yes but you need to prepare it first and lay a sub-base. Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Can artificial grass be laid on grass?

We wouldn't recommend laying artificial grass on existing turf. The existing grass should be removed and a sub-base laid before installing artificial grass. Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Do I need an underlay for artificial grass?

You should use underlay for your artificial grass and we recommend using a pad, particularly for the permanent installation of artificial grass on decking, concrete or other hard surfaces. When laying artificial turf on an existing grass profile, it is important to use a geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth.

Can artificial grass be laid on any surface?

Ultimate Grass artificial grass is versatile enough to be laid on just about any surface. It can be laid on soil, concrete, tarmac, paving and areas which have previously had natural grass (with suitable base preparation where required). It copes beautifully with sloping areas. It can even be laid on roof terraces and balconies.

CARING FOR ARTIFICIAL GRASS What to clean artificial grass with?

Generally speaking, there are two options available for you.

You can either let nature take its course (let the rain clean it!) or you can simply wash it down with a hosepipe. To keep your lawn looking brand new, we recommend giving it a quick brush once every 6 months. This keeps the pile standing up and looking clean.

Can artificial grass be washed?

Yes, see ‘what to clean artificial grass with’ above. You get your hose out and give the lawn a very quick clean with some plain water straight from the tap to keep it clean and looking good.

Can artificial grass be vacuumed?

Yes, artificial grass can be vacuumed, provided it doesn’t have high suction, it can be considered like a normal carpet, although it’s not that necessary.

Will I need to clean my artificial grass?

Although artificial grass doesn't require cutting like natural grass, your lawn will still need regular care. Rain will clean dust and other dirt from your lawn, but in drier seasons a regular rinse with a hose will be needed. Follow our care guide for a step by step walkthrough.

Will pet waste cause damage?

Pet soiling will not damage the grass, and any staining which may occur can easily be cleaned.

Animal urine will pass straight through the grass and be absorbed by the soil underneath - although we do recommend regularly rinsing the grass with water.

Will artificial grass fade?

No, our artificial grasses are fully UV resistant and carry a minimum guarantee of 9 years against fading from sun exposure, meaning your grass will stay green all year round!

Does artificial grass require maintenance?

No, maintenance is not really required. You may need to remove dead leaves or other debris, which may come from plants or trees from time to time.

ABOUT ARTIFICIAL GRASS Is artificial grass safe?

Absolutely! Artificial grass is a great choice for all households: it is non-toxic and hardwearing.

How long will artificial grass last?

Ultimate Grass comes with a 9-year warranty as standard, a well maintained artificial lawn's life expectancy could be as much as 20 years of maintenance-free life depending on the volume of traffic in the area.

What is artificial grass made from?

Artificial grass is made from the synthetic materials. The three main materials are:

Polyethene - which is long-lasting and gentle on the skin.

Polypropylene - which is also long-last but harsher and resilient.

Nylon - which is robust & often used in products due to its high burn tolerance.

Is artificial grass expensive?

Our artificial grass comes in rolls that are 4m x 25m. The cost of our artificial grass is from Ј17.98 to Ј23.98 per square metre.

Is artificial grass environmentally friendly?

Yes. Ultimate Grass doesn’t need to be watered like real grass. Even in prolonged periods of hot weather, it will stay green and lush without water. It also needs no mowing so there are no clippings to dispose of.
