DESCRIPTION
An uncommon, fascinating religious work containing numerous biblical passages, part of a series of devotional works published by Longman in the 1840s and 1850s.
Beautifully and colourfully illustrated throughout with intricate chromolithographs and vibrant floral designs. Illustrated by Henry Noel Humphreys.
Containing a description of the passages to the rear.
Uniquely bound in the publisher's original black papier mache binding, styled after an ivory binding of the crucifixion from the twelfth century. This binding is styled with twelve medallion emblems - six to each board - that depict the twelve miracles of Jesus. A truly unique example of this type of binding.
As is usual for this work, this binding is gutta percha.
CONDITION
In the publisher's original and unique quarter cloth binding with papier mache boards. Externally, generally smart, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and chipping to the papier mache boards at the top right corner of the front board, and right hand corners of the rear board. Internally, binding has failed, as is common with gutta percha, and pages are detached but present. A few spots and handling marks to the pages, which are otherwise generally bright and clean.
