DESCRIPTION

Complete in six volumes. These volumes include;

Volume I, containing 'Aar - Char', with six plates.

Volume II, containing 'Char - Gras', with six plates.

Volume III, containing 'Gras - Lees', with four plates.

Volume IV, containing 'Lees - Moun', with three plates.

Volume V, containing 'Moun - Shef', with four plates.

Volume VI, containing 'Shef - Z &c.', with five plates.

'The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales' is a topographical dictionary, of a detailed description of England and Wales. Each volume contains information of each county, city, borough, parish, and diocese within England and Wales, and describes their features and principal people. There is also an 'Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland', for which 'England and Wales' is a companion piece.

Written and edited by John Marius Wilson. Wilson is best known for his work on the 'Gazetteers'. He was born in Scotland, and after being ordained, worked for a while in Ireland. Later in his life he dedicated himself to writing, also publishing 'The Rural Cyclopedia', 'The Potato, it's Diseases, Uses, etc', 'The Divine Architect', 'Earth, Sea, and Sky', and 'The Land of Scott'.

Collated, incomplete, as lacking plate of 'Map of Portland'.


CONDITION

In the original publisher's cloth with gilt decoration to the front board and to the spine, and blind decoration to the rear board. Externally, smart. Minor shelfwear to the boards. Light rubbing to the joints. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Head of the spine of Volume I is lifting to the front joint, but remains firm. The odd light spot to the fore edge. Front hinge of Volume I is weak and may detach with further handling, and the rear hinge is strained. Front hinge of Volume III is strained and the rear hinge is starting. Front hinge of Volume IV is starting. Rear hinges of Volumes V and VI are starting. Some pages remain uncut to the fore edged of Volumes II and VI. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd handling mark and scattered spotting throughout, with the spotting being mostly to the first and last few pages. Small ink annotation to page 108 of Volume I. Prior owner's ink inscription the head of the title pages.
