Description: EDITORIAL REVIEWS REVIEW By Keichi Baba "There are traces of Billie Holiday and Carmen McRae in her phrasing, and Julie London and Peggy Lee in her delicate breathing, which harbors a touch of sorrow....The very successful Japanese debut [Nights of Key Largo] of an outstanding singer with a captivating voice." -- Swing Journal, Japan By Marc Myers CD discovery of the week. Vocalist Tessa Souter's Nights of Tessasouter2 Key Largo was recorded in New York and released late last year on the Japanese Venus label. I only caught up with the CD this past week. If you're unfamiliar with Tessa, she has a gorgeous vibrato and a timbre that's warm and sweet. And she's one of the few vocalists around today who knows how to distill a standard, pop tune or rock ballad into a tasteful jazz rendition. Tessa started out as a San Francisco journalist in 1992, Gallery_mainpic_6 writing for British Vogue and Elle and London's The Guardian and The Times. After moving to New York in 1996, she started sitting in at jazz clubs and soon won a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music in 1998. After studying with vocalese legend Mark Murphy, Tessa performed with Murphy, Joe La Barbera, Marvin Sewell, Larry Koonse, Bobby Sanabria and jazz tuba legend Howard Johnson. [Photo of Tessa by Richard Conde] Joining her on Nights of Key Largo are Joel Frahm (saxophones), Kenny Werner (piano), Romero Lubambo (guitar), Jay Leonhart (bass) and Billy Drummond (drums). Tessa_4The song selection is an interesting mix and includes the title sultry track by Benny Carter as well as The Island, Close Enough for Love, You Only Live Twice, I'm Glad There Is You, The Look of Love, and others. I personally can't stand Van Morrison's Moondance. Yet here, Tessa pulls it back a bit and creates an entirely different song, breathing new life into it. There's also fine work here by all of her sidemen, particularly Frahm, Werner and Drummond. -- JazzWax.xom By Suzanne Lorge Tessa Souter excels at creating mood and on her new CD, Nights of Key Largo, that mood is one of a relaxed intimacy: She never strains to emote, never pushes a note, never rushes a phrase. Her material--13 songs about moonlight, sand and romance--lends itself to this kind of laid-back treatment, reminding the listener that there is more to life than hurrying to be somewhere, with the stressful soundtrack that accompanies such a feverish lifestyle playing in one's head. Souter has selected some of New York's top musicians for her band, all of them just as practiced in the art of the slow groove as Souter. Pianist Kenny Werner is the master of subtle phrasing and adds unexpected color and commentary throughout the CD, especially on Souter's renditions of "The Look of Love," a contemplative dialogue between the two musicians that counters the usual understanding of this popular tune. Souter creates a similarly reflective mood with guitarist Romero Lubambo on the seductive "A Slow Hot Wind," with tantalizing solo lines by the incomparable Joel Frahm on saxophone. Jay Leonhart and Billy Drummond round out Souter's A-list rhythm section. As might be expected on a record celebrating a tropical isle, the CD has a couple of well-known Latin tunes--opener "The Island" and Sergio Mendes' "So Many Stars"--both easy and inviting and utterly indolent. But later Souter surprises with "All or Nothing At All" at a moderate Brazilian tempo and the bluesy "Key Largo," featuring Werner's bright chords and Drummond's spirited drum lines. The lyrics tell us that the sun has gone down--on the beach as well as on the lovers--and yet the vibe is so warm that you can still feel the rays on the sand. Souter's take on "Morning of the Carnival" opens with Leonhart bowing a sad little bit before she enters with her plaintive vocals, playing against the lyrics--an excellent choice for the eleventh-hour number and one of the standout performances on the disc. Another standout: Souter's arrangement of John Lennon's "Imagine," complete with inspired melodic alterations and interpolations of the "Long and Winding Road". It is quite a long road from the mainland to Key Largo, but with the top down and Souter's latest playing, the time would fly. -- AllAboutJazz By Victor Schermer There are two types of fine jazz singers. On the one hand, there are those who take a tune, swing it and play with it in various ways, whether with scat, shifts in accent and harmony, or even with deconstructions that re-interpret the song entirely. The man who started all that was, of course, Louis Armstrong. Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan and Kurt Elling, in different and more sophisticated ways, also fall into this category. On the other hand, there are those who adhere closely to the melodic line and intent of the song and sculpt it into something quite their own in a nuanced way, of whom Billie Holiday and Johnny Hartman are classic examples. Tessa Souter belongs to the second category. With a smooth soprano voice, a minimum of vibrato, clear articulation of lyrics, and steadiness of intent, she makes the song her own with subtle shifts of dynamics, timing, sonority and phrasing. That makes her a true artist. And as an artist, she is an impressionist and a minimalist, giving the music a modern feel. Souter offers her wares on two CDs, spaced four years apart, each consistent within itself but very different in approach from the other. In Listen Love she is a "thinker's singer," exploring the complex human meanings of songs, each of which has its own special twist, and with a bare minimum of instrumental accompaniment. In Night Of Key Largo she offers straight ahead singing, mostly romantic ballads, with a standard quintet backdrop and, in some cases, a light and pleasing swing effect. Both albums come off very well and introduce us to two different sides of a songstress who is faithful to her art and performs with a minimum of window-dressing, combining precision with a memorable afterglow. -- AllAboutJazz-Philadelphia ABOUT THE ARTIST Born of English and Trinidadian parents (both talented singers), award-winning New York-based singer, composer, lyricist and Motema recording artist, Tessa Souter, has a distinctive and exotically beautiful style of jazz which evokes Spain, North Africa and the Middle East, as well as the Celtic folk music she grew up hearing. "There's no one doing what Tessa does," enthused author and critic Will Friedwald, when she began singing in New York. "One of the most imaginatively programmed vocal sets of recent memory" said the Los Angeles Times, in a rave review of her California debut in 2002. "The best thing is that Souter sounds different," said the Philadelphia Inquirer of her most recent release, Obsession. Her distinctive sound has evolved naturally from the disparate musical styles she absorbed throughout her life, from Carmen Jones to Captain Beefheart and Sandy Denny to Sarah Vaughan. And she cites her biggest jazz influences as instrumentalists, specifically Miles Davis ("... for how he used silence as much as the notes.") and Wayne Shorter, whose Native Dancer album featuring Milton Nascimento was her introduction to jazz. "If I were only allowed to listen to one album for the rest of my life, that's the one I would choose," she says. "Every time I listen to it, I hear something new." In her relatively short career she has recorded and or performed with some of the world's top jazz musicians, including Steve Kuhn, Joe Locke, Gary Versace, David Finck, Kenny Werner, Ron McLure, Billy Drummond, Gene Bertoncini, Lew Soloff, Santi Debriano, Joel Frahm, John Hart, Essiet Essiet, Jay Leonhart, Marvin Sewell, Romero Lubambo, Gwilym Simcock, Nikki Iles, Asaf Sirkis, Winston Clifford, Lekan Babalola, legendary tuba player Howard Johnson, Joe La Barbera, and LA based guitarist Larry Koonse who says: "Tessa has all the qualities I most admire in a musician: great time, beautiful phrasing, gorgeous sound, a respect for silence, an emotional connection to the moment and a wonderful ability to tell a story. She is the 'real thing' in every way." Since 2004 she has recorded four CDs, including Listen Love (Nara, 2004), Nights of Key Largo (Venus, 2008), which won Swing Journal's coveted Gold Disc award, and Obsession (Motema, 2009). Her latest recording, Beyond the Blue (Venus, 2011), featuring Steve Kuhn, David Finck, Billy Drummond, Joe Locke, Joel Frahm and Gary Versace, has just been released in Japan. A riveting live performer, she's inspired standing ovations from Minsk to Moscow, and New York to Siberia, headlining to packed houses from New York's Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, Blue Note, Joe's Pub, Jazz Standard, Tribeca Performing Arts Center and the Kitano, to London's Pizza Express, Dean Street, Pizza on the Park, Ronnie Scott's and beyond. To quote a review [in the Rochester City Paper of her triumphant return to the Rochester International Jazz Festival 2009]: "To say that Souter enchanted the audience would be an understatement .... The capacity crowd seemed to be transfixed by Souter's gorgeous voice and wonderful personality."
