Authentic SS FRANCE maiden voyage commemorative medal, with certificate of origin

Today is offered for sale a rare original "SS France" commemorative large bronze medal and case. This wonderful and rare travel souvenir was given to the first ever first-class passengers to celebrate the maiden voyage of the great ocean liner "SS France" in 1962. "France" was the French Line's flagship until 1974, combining regular five days/nights transatlantic crossings with occasional winter cruises, as well as two world circumnavigations.

A grand ocean liner in the tradition of the SS Normandie, "France" was an ocean-going showcase for the French nation: at the time of its construction, it was the longest ship ever built, as well as one of the fastest, with an advanced propulsion system and a hull designed to withstand the rigors of the North Atlantic at high speed.

This beautiful gilt bronze medal designed by Josette Hébert-Coëffin was crafted by the "Monnaie de Paris" (French National Mint).  J.H-Coëffin (1908-1974) was a very renowned french sculptress, she was the first recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in New York city in 1937, and the same year she won the gold medal at the World Fair in Paris.

The front side shows a port bow view of the mighty liner with the legend “FRANCE” 1962   COMPAGNIE GÉNÉRALE TRANSATLANTIQUE, and the inscription LE HAVRE • NEW YORK  French Line

The reverse side features the bust of a young woman, Marianne,  a symbolic figure of the French Republic, with her gaze fixed towards the open sea, guided by a starry sky where one can recognize the constellation of the Big Dipper behind her head,  and waves below.  Inscription: ELLE • POURSUIT • SON • ESSOR   TECHNIQUE • ECONOMIQUE • ET • SOCIAL  ( She Continues Her Development / Technical, Economic and Social). Signature J.H. COËFFIN in small characters.

Edge : small-lettering “BRONZE” preceded by the cornucopia  hallmark, and no date. The absence of date identifies the original “maiden voyage” medal . Later similar medals were minted with a date on the edge. See photo of a medal minted in 1973.

The medal comes in a bespoke black round fitted case emblazoned with "FRANCE" in bold gilt letters and bearing the manufacturer's name inside the cover.

The medal is in mint condition. The box has minor wear and scuffing.

This wonderful medal will make a great addition to any vintage ocean liner memorabilia collection. Dimensions: medal  2-1/8" in diameter and 1/8" thickness;   box 2-3/8" in diameter, 1/2" thickness

Weight of the medal: 2.5 oz

Arrrivée triomphale à New York le 8 février 1962  /  Triumphant arrival in New York on february 8th, 1962

Incidentally, this medal was offered to one of the officers on duty during this maiden voyage of SS FRANCE. He was the chief surgeon (médecin principal). He had previously served on the SS NORMANDIE since her maiden voyage in may 1935. When war broke out, SS NORMANDIE was handed over to the USA in New-York, to be used for army transport across the Atlantic. Alas, a fire broke out during the transformation works, and the boat sank in New-York harbour. The officer then volunteered to join the Free French Naval Forces (FNFL) and eventually set up a hospital for the French sailors in London. After the war, he regained service on the SS ÎLE DE FRANCE (on which he participated in the rescue of 1,700 passengers and crew of the italian SS ANDREA DORIA in 1956) He later became chief sergeon on the newly built SS FRANCE, which was when he was presented with this medal. He retired in 1964 O X   O ¯

This medal will be accompanied by a certificate of origin drawn up and signed by the son of the officer who received it in 1962, together with a photo of the chief surgeon in question in his consulting room on SS FRANCE.

This item will be very carefully packed to prevent any damage in transit.
