Privilege of Sex - A Century of Canadian Women, edited by Eve Zaremba

Published by Anansi in 1974, 173 pages. Paperback (S8295F)

From the rear side cover: Canada's history has been written as if women did not exist. This unique collection of writings from the 1830's to 1925 now reveals how ordinary-and not so ordinary-Canadian women rose to a new awareness of themselves as the country came of age. In the first section, Brothers, Husbands and Fathers, women in early Canada do some hard thinking about their "roles", as the Victorian ideal of ladylike gentility clashes with the harsh realities of the New World. In A Woman's Place, there are two works, never before reprinted. Two Months in the Camp of Big Bear details Theresa Gowanlock's determination to survive in primitive captivity; N. Davenport's story tells how sheer nerve and tenacity carried her through an unparalleled journey in the Quebec bush. Changes brings us into the present century, as women begin transforming their doubts about assigned roles into political and social action. Eve Zaremba's lively, opinionated commentary throws these fascinating excerpts into perspective. Although such well-known names as Anna Jameson and Nellie McClung appear, the emphasis is on women writers often overlooked by literary history: farmers' wives, gentlewomen, homesteaders, the first female member of Parliament. In view of the current revolution in sexual attitudes, Privilege of Sex is essential reading for the Canadian woman who wants insight into her identity, both past and present. It is also an important book for anyone, male or female, who wants a better understanding of our heritage.

The condition of the book is generally good. The cover has some minor scuffs and blemishes, and light wear along the edges, but the spine is intact, and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
