DESCRIPTION
The fifth edition of this work, as stated to the title pages.
These four volumes formed the first series of this work. The novels present are 'The Black Dwarf', which is set on the Scottish Borders in 1707 and 'The Tale of Old Mortality' which is set in Southern Scotland in the years 1679-1689.
'The Black Dwarf' is set following the Union of Scotland and England and follows the escapades of Sir Edward Mauley, a hermit whom the locals believe is in league with the Devil. Mauley's tale contains love, revenge, betrayal and a threatened forced marriage.
'Old Mortality' follows Robert Paterson, a Scotsman who decided to travel around Scotland re-engraving the tombs of 17th century Covenanter martyrs.
These tales were purported to be collected from the fictional landlord of the Wallace Inn at Gandercleugh, compiled by 'Peter Pattieson' and edited by 'Dedediah Cleishbotham'. There is a lengthy description on the background of Peter Pattieson and Jedediah Cleishbotham to the introduction of 'The Black Dwarf'.
There were eventually four series from the 'Tales from my Landlord' series by Scott.
