LATE 19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE SALT GLAZED 'BANGOR STONEWARE CO.,' BANGOR, MAINE, 2 GALLON  STONEWARE HANDLED JUG, STAMPED #2,  W/BLUE SLIP GLAZE  (Circa 1875-1895) American antique stoneware jugs DIMENSIONS:  14 ½" Height x 9 ½" Width   DESCRIPTION:  With an obvious area of ceramic clay loss on the right of the knob spout. This was clearly the result of a previous 'knock' with another hard object or the result of a fall. There's no hairline fracture associated with this area of loss and no attempt has been made to repair or otherwise conceal this issue. The jug is free from other damage and its sidewalls, although undecorated with a cobalt blue slip glaze decorative motif, are by and large free from stains, loss or other damage. Underneath the pouring spout, the stoneware jug is stamped 'Bangor Stoneware Co.,' Bangor, ME and is accompanied by the number 2 (meaning its a 2-gallon stoneware jug.) It's handled and the stoneware ceramic handle is free from damage or condition issues as well. The jug sits firmly on a flat surface and was furnished for utilitarian use in the mid-to-late 19th century, somewhere between 1875-1895, most likely holding liquids for use in the home such as molasses, vinegar or whiskey. Offered as it was found. Still a good jug.  CONDITION: Fair to Good overall antique condition.
